GARBAGE PICK UP

The new bi-weekly garbage pickup has been in place for  years now,  but not all residents are following the schedule.

The wrong recycling is being put out each week despite being surrounded by the right recycling on the recycle pad.

Household garbage is being put out on a week when there is no pickup. On the correct week, it is being put out a day early. A hint is when there is no other garbage out on a Sunday night.

In some areas, especially the garbage pad on the hill to Montreal Road, regular garbage is not being physically separated from the recycling. If the two are not a sufficient distance apart, the City Garbage Collectors will not pick either up.

THE CONDOMINIUM IS CURRENTLY MAKING ALL EFFORTS TO IDENTIFY THE ORIGIN OF THE GARBAGE OR RECYCLING PUT OUT ON THE WRONG WEEK. A STANDARD CHARGE BACK OF $100 IS LEVIED AGAINST THE RESPONSIBLE UNIT.

HERE ARE THE RULES:

All residents should package their garbage securely and refrain from putting it out before 7:00 p.m. the night before collection. Normal garbage pick-up is every Monday for recycling and green bins. Household garbage pickup is every two weeks.

Garbage and recycling boxes should be placed along the curb at designated pick up locations and picked up as soon as possible after the garbage men have been by. Do not mix them with regular garbage.

There is to be no storage of garbage cans, recycle boxes or other objects at the front of the units or outside the back fences.

How to Package Your Garbage:

  • Do not use shopping bags, 'kitchen catchers', or cardboard boxes. Use black garbage bags.

  • Make sure materials are contained securely to avoid debris

  • Broken glass must be separated, boxed, and clearly labeled

  • Any carpet remnants should be tied and bundled securely. Bundles should be less than 1.2 m (4 ft.) in length, less than 60 cm (2 ft.) in diameter and less than 15 kg (33 lb.) in weight.

Disposal of Special Items:

The city does NOT pick up household appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, hot water tanks, televisions or computers at the curb. Arrangement for disposal of these items can be made by contacting the city for further information.

Plaster, wood, drywall, concrete, or other waste resulting from building alterations etc. are not collected with regular garbage. The items must be taken to a landfill for disposal by you or your contractor.

If you are unsure as to whether an item can go in the garbage please check the City’s website, www.ottawa.ca or contact the City at 311. If an item belonging to you is not taken please bring it back in and make arrangements for disposal. Items left at the curb will be removed by the corporation and charged back to the responsible unit wherever possible. The cost of this clean up is otherwise incurred by all owners and is a completely unnecessary expense.
